Dr Amiya Kumar Sahu
President,NSWAI

Established in the year 1996, the National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) is one of its kind and the only leading organization in India in the field of Solid Waste Management.

NSWAI was envisioned by Dr Amiya Kumar Sahu to address the pervasive deep-rooted problems and challenges associated with Solid Waste Management.

Considering the rapid growth and urbanisation in developing countries like India, there was a need to develop an understanding of Waste Management amongst all the stakeholders.

During the early 1990s, Dr Amiya Kumar Sahu spoke to the members of several distinguished organizations like the World Bank, prestigious universities like Harvard, Berkeley California and also some universities from Singapore, South Korea, Kyoto and Taiwan.

Then in late 1995, Dr AK Sahu met the then International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) President Dr John Skinner at Elmia Conference which ignited the urge to start an organization in the field of solid waste management in India. After returning to India, he along with seven other professionals of the field started NSWAI in September 1996 in Mumbai.

During its initial days, the organization's vision was to impart education and create awareness by organizing workshops, conferences, seminars and simultaneously holding regular talks with the municipal, State Pollution Control Boards, academics, students, NGOs and citizens at large.

NSWAI under the leadership of Dr AK Sahu held its first meeting with the then ISWA Managing Committee member Dr Luis Dias as the chief guest. This meeting was attended by the Municipal Commissioner, Secretary- Environment President Industries Association, Scientists, Engineers, Students, Professors and many others from Mumbai.

NSWAI’s contributions have been recognized across international institutions such as UNEP, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and several national systems such as the Bureau of Indian Standard, Planning Commission of India (now known as Niti Aayog) to name a few. The range of topics covered in years included waste management, waste-to-energy, waste management rules and guidelines, monetizing garbage and climate change.

NSWAI’s mission today under the new managing committee is to facilitate a circular economy, build an ecosystem to formalize the waste management sector and create a sustainable value chain to make a social, economic and environmental impact.
